How To Pinch Dahlias

Grow more dahlia blooms

If you want more flowers from your dahlia plants with very little effort, or you want to produce the largest bloom possible, you’ve come to the right place. Just follow these two simple steps and you’ll be on your way to armloads of impressive dahlia blooms by season’s end!

  1. TO PRODUCE MORE STEMS: When your dahila plant is 4-5″ tall and it has at least 2 sets of leaves, pinch the taller part of the stem back to the second set of leaves. This encourages the dahlia to grow more stems, resulting in more flower buds.
  2. TO PRODUCE BIGGER FLOWERS: Flowers buds will form in threes on your dahlia plants. When the buds form, gently pinch off the two buds to the side, leaving the middle bud to form a large flower.
